Details come from each firm's website and the Law Society of WA specialist list, checked October 2026. Google ratings are shown as published on Google and don't affect the order. Spotted something out of date? Tell us.

How we selected these Perth firms

We recorded 52 family law firms with offices in Perth CBD, West Perth and greater Perth, including Joondalup, Fremantle, Midland and Rockingham, then read each firm's own website: team, services, contact and fees pages. 10 made the shortlist. We favoured firms where family law is the main practice, with named family lawyers in the Perth office, accredited specialists we could confirm on the Law Society of WA specialist list, and clear published information about how they work.

Firms were left out for reasons such as:

  • Barristers' chambers
  • National legal services where no Perth family law team was confirmed
  • Firms whose website did not load when checked
  • Full-service or general practice firms where family law is one of many practice areas
  • Mediation-only practices
  • Family law firms with fewer named family lawyers or less published detail than those listed

How the order was set

The numbers are an editorial order, not a score. We weighed the same criteria together: firms come earlier where family law is the firm's whole practice, where more of the Perth team are accredited specialists we could confirm on the Law Society of WA specialist list, and where the firm publishes clear information about who you would deal with and how it charges. We also kept variety on the list, so firms with a particular focus or location, such as collaborative practice, international matters, Joondalup or Mandurah, are included even with smaller teams.

Firms close to each other in the order aren't meaningfully different, and a lower number doesn't mean a firm is a worse choice for your matter. The right firm depends on the kind of matter you have. Google ratings don't affect the order, and no firm has paid to be listed or placed. Read the full method.

Family law in Perth: courts and free help

Family law matters in Perth go to the Family Court of Western Australia, on Terrace Road in the CBD. It is a state court that exercises both state and federal jurisdiction: it hears divorce, parenting and property cases under the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth), and de facto property cases under the Family Court Act 1997 (WA). Judges and magistrates also sit on circuit in Albany, Broome, Bunbury, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie.

Free and low-cost help is available. Legal Aid WA has its main office on St Georges Terrace and a duty lawyer at the Family Court each weekday. Family Relationship Centres operate in the Perth CBD and Midland, and the Women's Legal Service WA and Fremantle Community Legal Centre both give family law advice.

Most specialist family law firms are in the CBD, around St Georges Terrace, Hay Street and Adelaide Terrace, with a second cluster in West Perth. A few firms run branch offices in Joondalup, Midland and Mandurah. The Law Society of WA accredits family law specialists, and every firm listed here has at least one lawyer on its published specialist list.

Where matters are heard

  • Family Court of Western Australia

Level 1, 150 Terrace Road, Perth WA 6000

A state court exercising both state and federal jurisdiction. It hears divorce, parenting, property and de facto matters for all of WA. Documents are lodged through the eCourts Portal. Call centre (08) 9224 8222.

  • Family Court of Western Australia: country circuits

Albany, Broome, Bunbury, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie

Judges and family law magistrates travel to these towns on set dates. Appeals under the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth) go to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1); appeals under the Family Court Act 1997 (WA) go to the WA Court of Appeal.

De facto property in WA is under state law

If you were in a de facto relationship in WA, the Family Court Act 1997 (WA) applies and the Family Court of Western Australia decides property and maintenance. The relationship generally needs to have lasted at least two years, unless there is a child under 18 or substantial contributions and serious injustice would result. One party must live in WA when the application is made, and both must have lived in WA for at least a third of the relationship or made substantial contributions while living here. Applications must be made within 2 years of separation; after that the court's permission is needed. Source
