Details come from each firm's website and the Queensland Law Society register, checked October 2026. Google ratings are shown as published on Google and don't affect the order. Spotted something out of date? Tell us.

How we selected these Brisbane firms

We recorded 41 family law firms with offices in Brisbane CBD and greater Brisbane, including Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and the Redlands, then read each firm's own website: team, services, contact and fees pages. 10 made the shortlist. We favoured firms where family law is the main practice, with named family lawyers in the Brisbane office, accredited specialists we could confirm on the Queensland Law Society register, and clear published information about how they work.

Firms were left out for reasons such as:

  • Firm website did not load or could not be read
  • Fully remote service with no local office practice
  • Full-service firms where no named Brisbane family lawyers could be confirmed
  • No street address shown, or the Brisbane office is by appointment only

How the order was set

The numbers are an editorial order, not a score. We weighed the same criteria together: firms come earlier where family law is the firm's whole practice, where more of the Brisbane team are accredited specialists we could confirm on the Queensland Law Society register, and where the firm publishes clear information about who you would deal with and how it charges. We also kept variety on the list, so firms with a particular focus or location, such as mediation, surrogacy, Ipswich or the Redlands, are included even with smaller teams.

Firms close to each other in the order aren't meaningfully different, and a lower number doesn't mean a firm is a worse choice for your matter. The right firm depends on the kind of matter you have. Google ratings don't affect the order, and no firm has paid to be listed or placed. Read the full method.

Family law in Brisbane: courts and free help

Family law cases in Brisbane are filed and heard at the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia in the Harry Gibbs Commonwealth Law Courts Building at 119 North Quay. Legal Aid Queensland has free family law duty lawyers at the court every day, and its head office is a short walk away at 44 Herschel Street.

Outside the CBD, Legal Aid Queensland has offices in Ipswich, Woodridge, Caboolture and Inala. Relationships Australia runs Family Relationship Centres at Upper Mount Gravatt, Strathpine and Ipswich, which offer family dispute resolution before court.

Many family law firms sit in the CBD, with a cluster along North Quay near the court. There are also specialist-led practices in Ipswich, Logan, Redcliffe, North Lakes and Victoria Point. Queensland Law Society publishes a register of accredited family law specialists, and every specialist named on this page was checked against it.

Where matters are heard

Domestic violence orders are a state court process

In Queensland, applications for a domestic and family violence protection order are lodged at a Magistrates Court, not the federal family court. You can apply yourself, or a police officer, lawyer, friend or family member can apply for you. Source

Checking a lawyer before you engage them

Every solicitor practising in Queensland needs a current practising certificate. You can search the Queensland Law Society Register of Solicitors, which also shows who holds family law specialist accreditation.

Family lawyers in Brisbane: common questions

How much do Brisbane family lawyers charge?

Most firms on this list don't publish their rates, so ask for a written costs estimate at your first meeting. Parker Family Law works mainly on fixed fees quoted stage by stage, Day Family Law handles divorce applications on a fixed fee, and Fallu McMillan Lawyers offers some fixed fee options and a monthly payment plan. Each listing notes what the firm publishes about fees.

Is the first consultation free?

At some firms. On this list, Unified Lawyers says every new client gets a free initial consultation, Page Provan charges a reduced rate for the first consultation, and Fallu McMillan Lawyers offers a no-obligation initial consultation. Most firms don't publish their first-meeting fee, so check when you book.

How do I choose between the firms on this list?

Start with the kind of matter you have. The 'Find a firm for your situation' list near the top of the page groups firms by the work they publish, such as property with trusts or businesses, mediation, or surrogacy. Then check who would run your matter, whether they're an accredited family law specialist, and how the firm charges.

What do I need to apply for a divorce?

You must have been separated for at least 12 months and 1 day. Applications are filed online with the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia through the Commonwealth Courts Portal, either jointly or by one spouse. Court fees apply, and some people can get a reduced fee.

Is there a time limit for property settlement?

Yes. If you were married, a property or spousal maintenance application must be filed within 12 months of your divorce becoming final. If you were in a de facto relationship, the application must be filed within 2 years of the relationship ending.

Do we have to try mediation before going to court over parenting arrangements?

Generally, yes. Before applying for parenting orders, separating families must make a genuine effort to sort out the dispute through family dispute resolution (FDR). If FDR does not resolve it, you usually need a section 60I certificate from an accredited FDR practitioner to file with your court application. There are exceptions, such as cases involving family violence, child abuse or urgency.

Where are family law cases heard in Brisbane?

At the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, Harry Gibbs Commonwealth Law Courts Building, 119 North Quay, Brisbane. The court's phone line is 1300 720 980.

Is there free family law help in Brisbane?

Yes. Legal Aid Queensland has free family law duty lawyers at the Brisbane court every day, and offices in the CBD, Ipswich, Woodridge, Caboolture and Inala. Women's Legal Service Queensland runs a statewide helpline for women, and Caxton Legal Centre runs a Family Law and Domestic Violence Legal Service.

Can I get mediation before going to court in Brisbane?

Family Relationship Centres run by Relationships Australia at Upper Mount Gravatt, Strathpine and Ipswich offer family dispute resolution. Relationships Australia says intake, group information and first child consultant sessions are free, and mediation fees depend on income, with concessions available.

How do I apply for a domestic violence order in Queensland?

You lodge the application at a Magistrates Court. You can apply yourself, or a police officer, lawyer, friend or family member can apply for you.

How can I check whether a Brisbane lawyer is an accredited family law specialist?

Search the Queensland Law Society Register of Solicitors and filter by Accredited Specialist and Family Law. Accredited specialists must keep practising in their specialty for at least 25 per cent of full-time practice.
